Last week: Dorothy 3-1
2008 Season: Dorothy 25-5

NORTHWOOD at CHILHOWIE

The Warriors have had a week off to prepare for their upcoming five game stint of straight district play. They are currently #2 on HogoOnline's rankings and boast one of the region's best offenses and defenses, which is definitely a rare feat for the Warriors known mainly for their defense alone. Northwood did not match-up well with the Pioneers and the Warriors may be a much harder task for the Panthers Friday night. The Warriors lead the last ten years of this Smyth County rivalry, 7-3.

PATRICK HENRY at GEORGE WYTHE

Having played just this Monday, there is much speculation as to whether or not the Maroons will be healthy enough to play 100% on both sides of the ball after the physical bout they endured against Fort Chiswell. The Maroons established a running game, lead by Will Sawyers, and strayed away from the passing game which has been the bread-and-butter of Pruitt's offense thus far this season. PH is coming off an emotional loss in the Shrine Bowl in Damascus last Friday, 21-6. PH kept it close until the fourth quarter before Holston stormed in for 14 more points in the last 6 minutes of the game. If Ronnie Groves and Robert Gonzales have not given up yet, they might muster some yards against a Maroon defense that doesn't do well with the rush. The Maroons have dominated the last ten meetings of this series, 9-1, including 9 straight victories.
  • 1998: Patrick Henry 34-6
  • 1999: George Wythe 23-10

  • 2005: George Wythe 36-13
  • 2006: George Wythe 38-19
  • 2007: George Wythe 38-0
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says George Wythe 28-20
HOLSTON at RURAL RETREAT

The Indians struggled yet again against another TRD powerhouse, Radford. The Bobcats dealt out 41 points in the game and illuminated the weaknesses of Rural Retreat's defense. The Indians offense also sputtered, amassing minimal yardage and only notching one score. The Indians' lethargic offense and inexperience on both sides of the ball have been their downfall in this rebuilding year. The Cavs, on the other hand, have found ways to score on defense, special teams, rushing, and passing. Holston can score points fast and use their speed and quickness to out-run defenders and make them miss. Coach Matlock likes for all of his skills players to have an opportunity to score, which typically results in lots of points for his experienced Cavs. The Cavs haven't beaten the Indians a single time in the last decade.
  • 1998: Rural Retreat 29-24
  • 1999: Rural Retreat 23-0
  • 2000: Rural Retreat 35-18

Last week: Dorothy 4-0
2008 Season: Dorothy 22-4

PATRICK HENRY at HOLSTON
Last week the Rebels downed Washington County rival John Battle in impressive fashion by racking up an eye-opening 51 points. PH scored more points against JSB than they had in their previous three games combined. Meanwhile, Holston took down Hogoheegee rival Northwood without much of a problem (47-13). John Pratt had a big night by getting involved in almost every Holston score on one end or another. Pratt is surely to be a nuisance to the Rebels defense as the Cavs hope to put a dent in PH's current streak against the Cavs and to redeem last year's disappointing collapse. PH has dominated this series and is 10-0 since 1998.
  • 1998: Patrick Henry 36-20
  • 1999: Patrick Henry 56-8
  • 2000: Patrick Henry 41-14

  • 2002: Patrick Henry 29-0
  • 2003: Patrick Henry 42-12

  • 2005: Patrick Henry 21-14
  • 2006: Patrick Henry 28-6
  • 2007: Patrick Henry 21-14
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Holston 36-18

LEBANON at NORTHWOOD
Now is not a good time for the Pioneers of L-Town to pay a visit to the Panthers. Northwood has not yet found a way to produce wins with their young offense. Last week the Panthers found it difficult to catch up to the speed of the Holston Cavalier offense and paid dearly for their inexperience in certain skills positions. Meanwhile, Lebanon was humbled by a much more physical Clintwood team who looks to make some more noise in the division one, group A scene this year. Lebanon leads in this former Hogoheegee district matchup for the last ten meetings, 9-1.
  • 1993: Lebanon 60-34
  • 1994: Lebanon 44-8
  • 1995: Lebanon 55-0
  • 2001: Lebanon 7-0
  • 2002: Lebanon 41-0
  • 2003: Northwood 14-12
  • 2004: Lebanon 47-0
  • 2005: Lebanon 42-27
  • 2006: Lebanon 41-14
  • 2007: Lebanon 63-6
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Lebanon 43-12

RURAL RETREAT at RADFORD
Each of these teams are coming off a rest week. The Bobcats enter the game ranked #2 in the HogoOnline rankings at 3-0. Radford has already redeemed much of last year's mediocre season and is one of the front runners to take on the always highly elusive the Region C, Division two crown. The Indians, on the other hand, are not having the season they're used to. When it's good it's good...but when it's bad, well it can just be plain bad. RR gave up 41 points to Glenvar two weeks back because of turnovers and poor execution and the Indians enter the contest averaging only 8 points per game. RR's lone win was a thriller over Grayson County (20-14), a team the Bobcats whipped 42-0. Rural Retreat dominated last year's contest.
  • 2007: Rural Retreat 37-7
  • 2008 Prediction: Radford 34-7

FORT CHISWELL at GEORGE WYTHE
The Maroons battled to the bitter end yet again and came away with another "L". Jacob Sharitz threw for 400 plus yards and Brandon Atwell caught for at least half of that in the losing effort. The good news for the Maroon offense is that their schedule is running out of teams who can defend such a high octane passing offense. Fort Chiswell, on the other hand, nearly stunned the entire state of Virginia. Being within minutes of the school's biggest upset in its history, Floyd QB Luke Harris and company made it happen and pulled the Buffs out to get the narrow 28-25 win. GW leads the last 10 meetings of this Wythe County rivalry with nine consecutive wins.
  • 1996: Fort Chiswell 20-12
  • 1997: George Wythe 33-15
  • 1998: George Wythe 28-6
  • 1999: George Wythe ?-?
  • 2000: George Wythe 38-6

  • 2003: George Wythe 62-6
  • 2004: George Wythe 62-0
  • 2007: George Wythe 37-6
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Fort Chiswell 28-20

Last week: Dorothy 5-0
2008 Season: Dorothy 18-4

CHILHOWIE at VIRGINIA
The Warriors are coming off of an epic 52-15 whopping over the Lonesome Pine's Pound this past Friday. This week's competition looks to be much more physical as Chilhowie will travel down to Bristol to take on the Bearcats of Virginia High School. The Bearcats lost in a tough bout against State Street rival Tennessee High last week, 28-17. The 'Cats are much improved since week one and boast a speedy offense. Don't look for this one to be as low scoring as last year. Virginia leads this short-lived series, 1-0.
  • 2007: Virginia 3-0
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Chilhowie 19-17

HOLSTON at NORTHWOOD
This is the first Hogoheegee bout of the season. Holston is coming off of a good game against fellow division one hopeful, Bland County (42-26 W). The Cavs are riding a four game win streak and have started out this season exactly as they did last season. The Panthers took an open week to rest up and put the season into perspective. There is still much to salvage for the Panthers and an upset win over the Cavs would be a fine way to start. Northwood leads this last ten meetings of this district rivalry, 7-3.
  • 1998: Northwood 21-20
  • 1999: Northwood 49-6
  • 2000: Northwood 46-12
  • 2001: Holston 20-13
  • 2002: Northwood 21-14
  • 2003: Northwood 46-12
  • 2004: Holston 12-7
  • 2005: Northwood 49-18
  • 2006: Northwood 36-14
  • 2007: Holston 43-21
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Holston 37-6

PATRICK HENRY at JOHN BATTLE
Each of these Washington County schools have had their struggles in the past weeks. The Rebels are looking for their first win since week one. Since then PH has had some second half struggles against some fairly stiff competition. Last week the Rebels could not keep up with the Honaker offense in route to a 26-13 loss. John Battle has yet to get a "W" this year and have found themselves down by colossal margins at the half. This could be a good game for each team to work out some offensive and defensive kinks. The Rebels have dominated this Washington County rivalry for the last ten years, 8-2.
  • 1998: John Battle 32-22
  • 1999: Patrick Henry 37-7
  • 2000: Patrick Henry 19-10
  • 2001: Patrick Henry 48-0
  • 2002: Patrick Henry 27-18
  • 2003: Patrick Henry 30-14
  • 2004: Patrick Henry 41-6
  • 2005: Patrick Henry 32-30
  • 2006: John Battle 37-12
  • 2007: Patrick Henry 35-28
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Patrick Henry 29-14

GEORGE WYTHE at GILES
Tough loss after tough loss has no doubt had its effects on the morale of the GW football team. Last week's OT loss to Region C favorite Floyd County (39-40) had an unbelievable ending and a heartbreaking one for Maroon fans, players, and coaches. Giles managed their first win of the year over county rival Narrows this past week with a 31-6 pounding. If Giles manages to win this game, it will be the first time in many years that both of these teams headed into the sixth week of the season with a losing record. Giles leads the last five meetings between these two teams, four of which were playoff games, 3-2.
  • 1993: Giles 21-13 (Playoff)
  • 2003: George Wythe 26-22 (Playoff)
  • 2005: Giles 29-7 (Playoff)
  • 2007: Giles 28-7
  • 2007: George Wythe 20-17 (Playoff)
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Giles 31-15

Week 4 Preview

The following predictions do not reflect bias or favoritism of HogoOnline. All scores are generated using formulas, rankings, and algorithms (which I named Dorothy) that are still in their infant stages. Please be kind to all predictions and remember, if you don't like it, the computer did it. After all, they're just silly predictions, right?

Last week: Dorothy 4-2
2008 Season: Dorothy 13-4

POUND at CHILHOWIE

Last week Chilhowie shutout winless Twin Springs, 33-0 with a grinding running game. This week the Warriors host another winless Region D team, the Pound Wildcats. The Wildcats have been outscored 27-92 in their first three games, which included a 25-8 defeat to another Hogo team, PH. The Warriors lead this young series 1-0, as their first ever meeting was last fall in Pound.
  • 2007: Chilhowie 44-12
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Chilhowie 42-6

HOLSTON at BLAND COUNTY
These two teams had tremendous, somewhat unexpected, successful seasons last fall. Last year these two teams duked it out with the Cavs barely escaping the Bears with a 7-6 victory in Damascus. This season wages many marbles as well. HogoOnline has these teams ranked 4th and 5th, which makes it the Region C game of the week. Many may disagree, but there is no doubt this one should be close. These teams have only played three times since 1992, with Bland leading the series 2-1.
  • 1992: Bland 12-7
  • 1993: Bland ?-?
  • 2007: Holston 7-6
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Holston 21-20

GLENVAR at RURAL RETREAT
The Indians managed to give a boost to their season that started off dismal by Grayson County, 20-14. Glenvar posted a close win over Parry McCluer in their season debut, 21-20. The Indians had no problem with the Highlanders last season in their 31-13 win, but this season the Indians have many few faces and many holes to fill.
  • 2007: Rural Retreat 31-13
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Glenvar 26-14

HONAKER at PATRICK HENRY
The Tigers downed the Twin Valley Panthers last week, 38-0, in route to their first win of the season. Up until that point, the Tigers' schedule had not been nice to them as they were handed down losses by area powers Lebanon and Richlands. PH endured their second loss of the year at the hands of the Marion Scarlet Hurricanes. Although they kept it close early, much like they did against Abingdon, the Rebels fell short and gave up 26 third quarter points in the 33-9 loss. Last fall the Tigers had no problem capping the Rebs with a 36-7 win. Honaker leads this series since 1999, 3-0.
  • 1999: Honaker 40-7
  • 2000: Honaker 21-16
  • 2007: Honaker 36-7
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Honaker 27-14

FLOYD COUNTY at GEORGE WYTHE
The Buffaloes have shown why many have picked them as the Region C, Division 2 favorite for the 2008 season. Big wins over RR (47-0) and most recently Patrick County, a team that boasts one of the better running backs in Region III, 28-13. George Wythe fell in another close one as Radford got the best of them last Friday at Norman Lineburg Stadium, 20-13. If the Maroons can keep their composure, Sharitz and company are sure to give Floyd County all they can handle. However, the Roons must find a way to stop Floyd's signal-caller, Luke Harris, who could be the best quarterback in all of southwest Virginia. George Wythe leads all the meetings between these two since 1999, 2-1.
  • 1999: Floyd County 28-6 (Playoff)
  • 2002: George Wythe 20-16 (Playoff)
  • 2007: George Wythe 21-15
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Floyd County 34-15
