Hogo Diamond Teams go from 4 to 1 in a matter of hours

Only Patrick Henry's softball team remains after the Pioneer district took three out of four over Hogoheegee teams last night.

Chilhowie's baseball team couldn't hold on to a late one run lead and fell to Bath County in the first round of the Region C tournament for the second time in six years.

James River's baseball team flexed it's muscles as the Pioneer District's season and tournament champ by ousting George Wythe out of contention with a 7-3 win.

Abbie Rexrode pitched a complete game shut-out to nail down the Northwood Panthers 4-0 in the first round of the Region C Softball tournament.

And then there was the girls from PH - "The Last of the Hogoheecans". Up against a team with a less than impressive record, Patrick Henry managed to squeak out a 1-0 victory over Pioneer runner-up Craig County. Life doesn't become any easier for the Lady Rebs as they are slated to face last year's Group A runner-up, Glenvar. The Highlanders (18-4) shutout visiting Fort Chiswell 8-0 in the first round of the Region C tournament - Patrick Henry will need to score more than just 1 run to defeat Glenvar. In fact, it would be preferable if the Rebels scored more runs than Glenvar altogether - that is how PH has defeated most of their opponents thus far this season. One notable fact, PH hasn't allowed a single run since the end of their regular season.

Rebels and Panthers continue their remarkable seasons

With the regular season and district tournament concluded, only two Hogoheegee softball teams remain. Rural Retreat and Chilhowie ended their seasons with first round losses. Holston, whose late season surge boosted them into the second around of the district tournament, was terminated at the hands of PH while Northwood closed out GW. Now just PH and NW remain.

NORTHWOOD: The Panthers have only won one of their last four including two losses to Hogo front-runner PH and a loss to former Hogoheegee rival, Lebanon. The Panthers must travel to James River to take on the Knights out of the Northern Roanoke Valley. The Knights stormed through their Pioneer district schedule, winning all ten games. At 16-5, four of the Knights' five losses were to AA schools with another to TRD powerhouse Glenvar. James River has highly esteemed pitcher Abbie Rexrode to thank for their success. The Panthers (14-7) must overcome and regain their confidence if they want a chance to advance.

PATRICK HENRY: The Rebs get to host Craig County from New Castle, VA in the first round of this years Region C softball tournament. PH has won 13 of their last 15, with their only two losses during that stint coming in close games to rivals Virginia and Abingdon. PH is 18-3-1 and has an outstanding starting cast to thank. Meanwhile, Craig County is just 10-8, with three of those losses coming at the hands of Pioneer power James River and seven of their losses were by just 2 runs. Neither team shared a common opponent.

Chilhowie takes tourney - GW advances

Four teams said goodbye to the 2008 baseball season that housed many great games and included a district race that was never out of reach. Northwood, Patrick Henry, Rural Retreat, and Holston all contributed to a great year and any avid spectator in the district would wish the competitiveness of this season will repeat itself for many years to come.

Two of the six Hogo teams are still keepin' on. Chilhowie managed to win 9 straight district games to end the regular season and then swept the tournament, topping both Holston and George Wythe in low scoring games. George Wythe managed to take second in both the regular season and the tournament. This season was GW's 5th consecutive year with a runner-up finish in the district tournament.

GEORGE WYTHE: The Maroons have only won five of their last ten, but appear to be poised upon entering Region C play. GW will travel to Buchanan, VA of Botetourt County to take on the Knights of James River. James River swept the Pioneer district this season and amassed a 19-3 overall record. The Knights' only losses coming to AA county rival Lord Botetourt twice and a 6-5 loss to Three Rivers District powerhouse, Glenvar.

CHILHOWIE: The Warriors have won 13 of their last 14 games, including 9 consecutive district games and the district tournament. Chilhowie's only loss during that stint came at the hands of Radford, 8-7. The Smyth County school gets to host it's second first round game in as many years, this time against Bath County. The last time these two teams played was in 2003 when the Chargers, led by Jake Phillips, came from behind to top the Warriors 10-6 in a controversial first round regional game in Covington. Neither team had any common opponents this year.

Warriors repeat - this time outright

6) Rural Retreat - For a last seed, the Indians are fairly stout. Pitchers Travis Sims and Wyatte Pickett have held their own despite losing more than winning. Should the Indians be able to get the bats going like they did in the last meeting with PH (won 10-1) it probably won't matter who they pitch. If the Indians top the Rebels in round one, county-rival GW is next. RR kept it close in the first meeting but was hammered 10-0 at Bob Turner Field in Wytheville. Despite being a 6th seed, the Indians can pack quite a punch depending on their mood and are extremely capable of reaching the finals.

3) Patrick Henry - The mid-season drought that plagued much of PH's season appears to be over. They have won three of their last five, including three district games. Any district win in the 2008 Hogoheegee Baseball edition is a good district win, as all the teams are seemingly even. The third seed team, typically, feels pretty good about the tournament. They get the 6th seed first and the lesser of the two evils between the 1st and 2nd seed next (fact: 2nd seed is always less evil than the 1st). This year, however, anything could happen as the Rebels have managed to split both regular season games between each of the Wythe County schools.

5) Northwood - Much like their 6th seed counterpart, the 5th seeded Panthers are also fickle and moody. Depending on the time of day and the tilt of planet Earth, Northwood can be capable of hanging with Region D power Lebanon, topping Marion twice, and defeating Patrick Henry. Other times, the Panthers struggle to score runs and stop the other team from scoring their own. It would probably be more appropriate if I wrote "Who Knows?" as the write-up for each team but I thought that would be a huge drag. On that note, as for the fate of NW, "Who Knows?". They have Holston first, who they lost to twice in the regular season by three runs each time. Should they get by the Cavs, they face the tournament host, Chilhowie, who has outscored the Panthers 21-1 this year.

4) Holston - The Cavs have been the district's lone consistent team this season. They have beaten both teams below them twice each and have lost to the three teams ahead of them twice apiece. If this holds true, the Cavs are destined to take out NW in the first round and get stalled by the Warriors in the second. However, the Cavs have not been intimidated by the district's top team this season after giving them a good bout in each regular season affair. If any team in the district deserves the title "Darkhorse", the Cavs do.

2) George Wythe - Since having to settle for second place after falling to Chilhowie 7-0 at Warrior Field on May 13, the Maroons have "unleashed the beast" on opponents. GW took care of business against Northwood and Holston by mercy ruling each with a combined 21-1 deficit. Should their momentum continue forward into the tournament, the Roons have an opportunity to avenge a late season loss to PH in the tournament or take on the always dangerous Indians of Rural Retreat. I'm not sure which team Coach Jason Lutrell would rather face, but as his team has shown in their last two games - they're ready to score runs.

1) Chilhowie - Last season the Warriors had to settle for having a HogoOnline Banner that read "Hogoheegee District Co-Champs". Well this season there is no John Battle to worry about and in light of that, Chilhowie repeated as district champs for the second straight season - this time, all by themselves. Chilhowie has won 11 of their last 12 games including 9 straight district bouts. The Warriors' side of the bracket include Northwood and Holston. Chilhowie breezed by Smyth County rival Northwood twice in the regular season, but merely stumbled past Holston. Having a Region C berth sealed and a lot of momentum on their side - the Warriors have a clear shot at running the tournament table.. that is, if they aren't looking too far ahead.

PH takes crown and momentum entering tournament

6) Rural Retreat - From RR's view, this year's softball bracket is straight-up. The Indians must fight past GW to get the chance to play NW. Although one piece of hope is that before the game was rained out, Rural Retreat held second seeded Northwood to just six runs on May 8th. Should the Indians pull off an upset against their arch-county-rival, the Maroons, and move onto play the Panthers, the entire season was certainly worth it.

3) George Wythe - As far as HogoOnline knows, GW never made up the Marion double-header, ending the regular season at 18 games, winning eight. The Maroons have lost four of their last five games, two of which included the likes of Northwood and Patrick Henry - the district's juggernauts. Clearly the Maroons are favored to take the first round over winless RR - but that is where the fun could stop. The Wythevillians would then meet Northwood in the semis, who have outscored them 22-2 in their two meetings this season.

5) Holston - It was clear that Holston had a lot of fight in them for most of the season. As in my previous post when I vowed that Holston would not stay a one-win team for long, and to prove me right, they are now a four-win team. I will now take it a step further and say that Holston is probably the best four-win team in the state (there probably aren't many that exist anyway). Holston must face Chilhowie in the first round, a team they trounced 13-1 just last week. Should the momentum carry-over, the Cavs have a good shot at facing the tournament host, Patrick Henry, in the semi-finals. PH is a team that has given Holston their only mercy-rules this year with two 16-1 whoppings.

4) Chilhowie - With the games that were reported, the Warriors barely managed to eek out a winning record, going 8-7 on the year, 4-6 in the Hogo. The Lady Warriors have lost five of their last seven, including a 13-1 beat down by Holston (4-16). Should the Warriors manage to pull it together and overcome the ladies from Damascus, Chilhowie would move on to face PH in the semis - a team they only lost to at home by four runs. If the Warriors happen to overlook Holston again, their season could end a little sooner than they had wished for.

2) Northwood - The second seed always has the most pressure on them. You didn't win the district regular season - so advancement to regionals is not automatic - and because of that - huge, imaginary targets appear on your back. Northwood lost their last two games of the regular season, but now is not the time to lose confidence if the Panthers want another rematch with PH and an advancement to the Region C tournament. The bracket is favorable for NW, as they have eased by both Rural Retreat and George Wythe twice this year.

1) Patrick Henry - What a season for the Rebels. They started off by making a name for themselves in the Kingsport Eastman Tournament and then followed through by sweeping the Hogo. Now, Patrick Henry has won 16 games and has a free ride to the Region C tournament. Their side of the bracket is a little tricky, however- both Holston and Chilhowie are capable spoilers despite the regular season outcomes. Against Holston and Chilhowie this season, the Rebs have outscored the opposers 52-4. That is extremely convincing. Having won 11 of their last 13, including four straight - PH is carrying quite a bit of momentum with them.

Hogo Baseball = Huge Mess

This.. is a huge mess.
And so is the Hogoheegee. One thing is for certain - baseballs are round. One would have a better shot at more accurately guessing how many fingers I'm currently holding up than predicting the winner in a game between any two of the Hogoheegee teams.

Holston: These guys are 7-8, 4-3 in the district and have the toughest season schedule remaining. They haven't beaten any of the district teams they have left which include George Wythe, Patrick Henry, and Chilhowie - but don't count those chickens yet. George Wythe was humbled by Chilhowie, a team that Holston had a chance to beat late; Patrick Henry had a horrible five game skid before dishing out a 10-2 win over the Cavs just yesterday, and Chilhowie (as previously stated, was a close game for the Cavs). Best case scenario for Holston would be to win two of their next three with one of those two being against PH. That will lock them at third.

Rural Retreat: Patrick Henry probably wasn't expecting the last place team to have a lot of fight in them - but they were wrong - by about 9 points. The next night the Indians notched a tie with Oak Hill Academy. The following night, the Indians were blown away by Holston, 12-2. See the trend here? The good, the bad, the ugly. Who knows what could come of the Indians' season? The Indians travel to Northwood on Friday in an attempt to tie up the fifth spot and avenge a 4-1 loss to the Panthers on April 22. The most RR can salvage from this season at this point is an outright fifth place if they win out and NW loses out. It could happen.

Patrick Henry: What happened? On April 22nd at 4:30 PM, Patrick Henry was 7-3 and 3-0 in the district, looking to have an excellent season. On May 2nd at 7:30 PM, the Rebels were 7-8, 3-4 in the district, looking for a way to just score runs. In a five game skid that lasted from April 22 to May 2, the Rebels were outscored 36-7. This comes directly after the previous 10 game span where they outscored their opponents 87-57. Things may be back on track now after the Rebels welcomed Holston to Glade Spring with a 10-2 beat-down on May 6, but it's tough to say whether or not the effect will carryover into the rest of the schedule. If the Rebels win out and George Wythe or Chilhowie lose out, they could possibly grab or tie second place in the district.

Northwood: While everyone else was laying the licks on PH during their skid, Northwood wouldn't be left out. Jumping in just in the nick-of-time, the Panthers stole a 3-2 win over the Rebels for their second district win of their season, giving them fifth place. Although last night's score between Northwood and Bland County was never reported (if the game was even played), the Panthers have at least two good wins under their cleats over PH and Oak Hill Academy before fending off visiting Rural Retreat for the fifth spot on May 9. Should NW win out and either Holston or Patrick Henry lose out, the Panthers could at least nab a tie for 4th place. In the midst of this jumbled mess, as I've said before, it is very possible. In fact, it is almost likely that whatever you think will happen, probably will not happen.

George Wythe: Devin Smith failed to have a repeat performance of his epic 21 strikeout game that he had against PH - against Chilhowie. In fact he allowed the Warriors 10 hits and 11 runs. But not to worry for him or the Maroons. He is going to play college baseball at Concord regardless and the Maroons have four district games remaining and have a shot at first place in the district. The Roons won their first five district games before the setback to Chilhowie and visit Auburn in Riner, VA to get back on track tonight (May 7). Still remaining in the district are Holston, Patrick Henry, Chilhowie, and Northwood - should GW win out, they are the regular season district champs- anything less will depend on Chilhowie.

Chilhowie: It has been quite a week for the Warriors. The fourth inning had it all - mass confusion, an ejection, and 8 runs - but Chilhowie finally rolled to a 11-5 win over then district leading GW. Since then the Warriors have traveled to Radford and despite a grand-slam by Cody Haga, the Bobcats hit two homers of their own to seal the 8-7 victory. Missing several seniors due to extracirricular activities other than baseball (there are other things than baseball?) the Warriors hosted Oak Hill Academy on May 6 rather than originally slated Rural Retreat and managed a 19-7 win in that affair. A rematch of the high-emotion George Wythe game is slated for May 13 in Chilhowie - if both teams play baseball, all will be well. The Warriors also have Holston and Rural Retreat left on the schedule and although the Warriors beat both teams the first time around, neither win was convincing. There is no such thing as a sure win this season. Should the Warriors win out, they are the district regular season champion. Anything less will depend on George Wythe.

PH & NW play close - softball season no disappointment

The two district juggernauts met on May 1st to decide who was going to withold the number one spot atop the season' s standings. Although NW ended their 9 game winning streak, the game hardly disappointed fans on either side as PH edged the Panthers 2-0. The two meet again on May 14 as the last district game for both teams. Should the teams hold steady until then, one could expect an outcome at least as thrilling as the first one; if not more.

Chilhowie: Unless the Warriors reschedule the postponements of Fort Chiswell or Abingdon, their season is on the brink of closure. The Warriors's season started late due to the success of the lady's basketball squad, and surprisingly they wound up playing more district games in the span of time since then than any other team. With that being said, the Warriors lost their last district game against the Maroons of Wythetown, 2-3, at home. This setback sent them spiraling back into fourth spot. Should Chilhowie win out and George Wythe win only one of their next two district games, a tie for third is in the making - probably yielding a coin flip. Blech.

George Wythe: The Maroons ended a mid-season four game losing skid with a mid-season four game winning streak. Not bad. Nabbing high scoring wins over the Mountain Empire's Bland County and Fort Chiswell as well as a (non-reported score) win over RR provided the catalyst necessary for GW to oust Chilhowie from the third spot in the standings. The Maroons were penciled to play four away games in four days. Northwood (2-14 loss), Bland County (unreported), Pulaski County on May 7 and Patrick Henry on May 8. Should the Maroons muster the energy to defeat PH in the last of the four day stint and overcome Holston on the 13th, they take the third spot in the district outright. If they only win one or the other, it'll be left up to Chilhowie or the side of quarter.

Holston: Hard work will eventually payoff. After speaking with Cav head coach Lisa Blackburn, I'm sure that's the team's motto. "Heartbreaking" was the word she used to describe every Cavalier loss this season and I would have to agree. What other team in the history of high school sports has gone 1-14 and has only been mercy ruled once? I can't name one, mainly because I haven't researched it, but Holston for sure is one of those teams. Of their 14 losses this season, the Cavs have been outscored by an average of 3.7 points per game. If you take away the 16-1 loss to Patrick Henry on May 5th, their only mercy rule loss, they've lossed those 13 games by an average of 2.8 points per game. Imagine losing by an average of less than 3 points thirteen times - in a row. That's what the Cavs have done but hard work has finally paid off as the Cavs took an 8-3 victory over the RR Indians last Thursday. So maybe the Indians are winless, but now the Cavs aren't and with five games remaining, I doubt they remain a one win team for long either.

Northwood: One may be the loneliest number that you'll ever do, according to Three Dog Night's popular 1969 hit. Two can be as bad as one, if that's what you were outscored by against the number one team. So maybe it's a stretch. In Glade Spring on May 1st, the Panthers marched off the field with an ended 9 game win streak and second place in the standings. Feeling frustrated with the defeat, the Panthers hosted GW four days later and whopped them 14-2. Before hosting the Rebels in the rematch slated for May 14, the Panthers must travel to Rural Retreat and host Bland County - the Panthers are likely to show no mercy. One can only hope that the rematch is as tooth and nail as the last.

Patrick Henry: This team is full of solid softball players; Barbrow, Kelly, Weddle, Thomas, Haynes...Haynes, among others. These Lady Rebels have made a big boom in the Hogoheegee this season earning the top spot in the season standings with a 13-3-1 overall record and an unblemished 7-0 record against district opponents. The Rebels suffered a setback on May 6 with a 4-1 loss to Virginia High and must host three more home games before traveling to Saltville to defend the top spot against the Panthers once more. PH is good enough to run the table but it certainly will not be a simple task - George Wythe, rival John Battle, Holston, and of course Northwood all stand in the way. The next week should be interesting.

Rural Retreat: Yesterday's score between Fort Chiswell and Rural Retreat went unreported. The Indians still have two district games remaining, including Northwood and an away game against the Lady Cavs of Damascus. Should the Indians win at least one of their next two games and Holston loses out - the Indians could tie up the fifth spot - the lone, bright opportunity for Rural Retreat in this down season.
