Chilhowie takes tourney - GW advances

Four teams said goodbye to the 2008 baseball season that housed many great games and included a district race that was never out of reach. Northwood, Patrick Henry, Rural Retreat, and Holston all contributed to a great year and any avid spectator in the district would wish the competitiveness of this season will repeat itself for many years to come.

Two of the six Hogo teams are still keepin' on. Chilhowie managed to win 9 straight district games to end the regular season and then swept the tournament, topping both Holston and George Wythe in low scoring games. George Wythe managed to take second in both the regular season and the tournament. This season was GW's 5th consecutive year with a runner-up finish in the district tournament.

GEORGE WYTHE: The Maroons have only won five of their last ten, but appear to be poised upon entering Region C play. GW will travel to Buchanan, VA of Botetourt County to take on the Knights of James River. James River swept the Pioneer district this season and amassed a 19-3 overall record. The Knights' only losses coming to AA county rival Lord Botetourt twice and a 6-5 loss to Three Rivers District powerhouse, Glenvar.

CHILHOWIE: The Warriors have won 13 of their last 14 games, including 9 consecutive district games and the district tournament. Chilhowie's only loss during that stint came at the hands of Radford, 8-7. The Smyth County school gets to host it's second first round game in as many years, this time against Bath County. The last time these two teams played was in 2003 when the Chargers, led by Jake Phillips, came from behind to top the Warriors 10-6 in a controversial first round regional game in Covington. Neither team had any common opponents this year.
