Week 8 Predictions

The following predictions do not reflect bias or favoritism of HogoOnline. All scores are generated using formulas, rankings, and algorithms (which I named Dorothy) that are still in their infant stages. Please be kind to all predictions and remember, if you don't like it, the computer did it. After all, they're just silly predictions, right?

Last week: Dorothy 3-0
2008 Season: Dorothy 28-5

PATRICK HENRY (2-5,0-2)
at CHILHOWIE (6-0,1-0)

The Warriors were slow to wake from their open week slumber as made evident by the surplus of turnovers and near-turnovers produced by their offense and special teams against Northwood. Led by the speed-option QB Josh Jackson, the hard-nose rush attack of Alex Russell, and the high-flying finesse of "Tuff" Williams, the Warriors managed to hold it together long enough to have a 35-0 score entering the fourth quarter. Patrick Henry endured an aerial attack similar to that of Pearl Harbor as Jacob Sharitz and Brandon Atwell connected several times, for several yards, and several points to overcome the Rebels. Ronnie Groves made it interesting in the third quarter with a 58 yard run to pull the Rebels within a couple of scores but ultimately their surge petered out. Chilhowie leads this "next-door-neighbor" series 6-4 in the last ten meetings.

  • 2006: Chilhowie 32-26
  • 2007: Chilhowie 26-7
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Chilhowie 35-7
HOLSTON (7-0,3-0)
at GEORGE WYTHE (2-4,1-0)

Both of these teams are coming off of big district wins. Holston is riding a 7-0 record into Wytheville and boast one of the most explosive offenses in all of southwest Virginia. The Maroons offense has veered from their traditional running game and have relied on the arms and hands of Jacob Sharitz and Brandon Atwell. These airmen have rallied the Maroons into two straight wins in a season that did not have the start many expected. The Cavs have not beaten the Maroons since 1991; the birthyear of many players for both teams. This game will be loaded with many of the region's big name athletes and is perhaps the biggest district game for Holston in over two decades.
  • 1998: George Wythe 29-19
  • 1999: George Wythe 58-7
  • 2000: George Wythe 60-8
  • 2001: George Wythe 41-0
  • 2002: George Wythe 45-7
  • 2003: George Wythe 33-0
  • 2004: George Wythe 46-0
  • 2005: George Wythe 41-12
  • 2006: George Wythe 40-20
  • 2007: George Wythe 42-0
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Holston 21-14
RURAL RETREAT (1-5,0-1)
at NORTHWOOD (0-6,0-2)

This game doesn't have the Region C Division 1 playoff implications like it has in the past, but there is one thing left on the line: diginity. Northwood has not been able to post a win thus far this season despite respectable efforts against Lebanon and Chilhowie in recent weeks. Rural Retreat has had a rough road as well losing to several successful division 2 teams this year including Floyd County, Radford, Glenvar, and Fort Chiswell. Neither of these teams want a last place finish in the district and Northwood does not want a winless season. The stands might be empty and the crowd may be thin, but this bout will be the usual slobber knocking NW-RR fest. The Indians lead all meetings since 1999, including two playoff games in that stint, 9-2.
  • 1999: Northwood 19-14
  • 1999: Rural Retreat 21-14 (Playoff)
  • 2000: Rural Retreat 24-0
  • 2000: Rural Retreat 41-6 (Playoff)
  • 2001: Rural Retreat 26-12
  • 2002: Rural Retreat 34-14
  • 2003: Northwood 33-13
  • 2004: Rural Retreat 37-6
  • 2005: Rural Retreat 38-6
  • 2006: Rural Retreat 33-12
  • 2007: Rural Retreat 59-7
  • 2008 Prediction: Dorothy says Rural Retreat 26-20
